Symbolic Elements
There are so many things to consider when planning your wedding day. The ceremony itself often gets lost amongst the excitement of dresses, flowers and canapes! However, I believe the wedding ceremony should be high on your list of priorities and getting it just the way you want it may include something symbolic for the two of you.
Handfasting
I can perform a handfasting ritual during your ceremony. This involves the tying of hands together with a cord, ceremonial cloth, or colourful ribbons, to symbolise the joining together as a couple.
The phrase ‘tying the knot’ originates from this symbolic ritual.
Sand Ceremony
The delightful blending of the ‘sand ceremony’ is both popular and contemporary. The sand is used to symbolise the merging of two lives. The couple each have their chosen colour of sand which is poured into a larger vessel creating a beautiful work of art and memento which is treasured forever.
If there are children involved in the ceremony, they too can have a colour of sand representing their part in the couple’s lives.
Unity Candle Ceremony
The ‘Unity Candle’ is a commonly used ritual performed at weddings. It is done with at least 2 thin tapered candles and one larger, central candle, also called the unity candle. It is aptly named because it symbolises the unity of the couple; the merging of their two lives.
If there are children or other family members present, they too can have a candle and be involved in the process.
Ring Warming
A ring warming can be a lovely way to include all of your guests within the ceremony. Before the rings are exchanged, they are passed around between the guests; each will hold them for a moment and warm them with their love, a blessing, a wish or a good intention for the couple’s future happiness.
